Offcumduns are a group of men and women who do a particular type of Morris dancing which developed in the North West of England - hence the clogs! Some of the dances are our interpretations of those which were developed toward the end of the last century for the processions made on high days and holidays in Lancashire and Cheshire, and they bear the names of northern towns, like Stockport and Horbury. Other dances we have made up, usually keeping the same sort of style and stepping, and we have named some of them after places in our part of the country - like Eastry. We also have a dance called Ham Sandwich!
During the winter we usually practice in Eastry, near Sandwich, in Kent, but we come from all over East Kent. In the summer we dance at pubs, fetes and festivals, not only in England but also abroad. We have danced in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
An Offcumdun? It's a Northern dialect term for a person who is out of his or her usual place - in other words, one who's come from off! But we hope that wherever you see us dance, you will enjoy watching us - and maybe consider joining us. New members are warmly invited to join us in the autumn each year either as dancers or musicians. No previous experience is required.
